My Year in Books: The Disability-Focused Titles

The cover of From the Heart by Barbara Hinske. The title is at the top, with two dogs below. On the left is a small white dog with a fluffy coat and red collar. On the right is a larger black Labrador with a red bone-shaped tag that reads Garth. The background is a dark gradient, emphasizing the dogs. The author’s name is at the bottom.

The final blog post about my reading this year is about the books related to disability, the final category of diversity that I mentioned in my previous post. Below are the books I’ve read that are either by authors with disabilities, with characters who have a disability, or are on the subject of disability.

Here are the books, fiction and non-fiction together.

  • Alyass, Ghofran – You Have 24 Hours to Live.
  • Cronshaw, Jon – GameLit01: Blind Gambit.
  • Findlay, Carly – Say Hello.
  • Hinske, Barbara – Guiding Emily04: Down the Aisle.
  • Hinske, Barbara – Guiding Emily05: From the Heart.
  • Iannella, Antonio – Saigon Siren: Memoir of a Stroke Recovery.
  • Ladau, Emily – Demystifying Disability: What to Know, What to Say, and How to Be an Ally.
  • Law Christina – Blessings from Within the Dark.
  • Leduc, Amanda – Exploded01 Disfigured: On Fairytales, Disability and Making Space.
  • Lowry, Lois – Giver03: Messenger.
  • Lucyne, Linsay – Travel Beyond Sight: A Step-by-step Guide to Level Up Your Self-Esteem and Grow Your Confidence in Travel.
  • Man, Sue – On the Road to Jericho
  • Obasogie, Osagie – Blinded by Sight: Seeing Race Through the Eyes of the Blind.
  • Walsh, Kerry -Finding My Feet: A Rare Warrior’s Journey Through SMA and the Unknown.
  • Wells, HG – The Country of the Blind and Other Stories.
  • Zulu, Musa E – Mastering the Art of Self-Motivation: Tap into the Real You.

My intention for the coming year is to find more books concerning neurodiversity. Since it is receiving so much more focus in the media and in the world, I am certain there must be books available that relate to these disabilities… I know I have several on my list that are Deafness-focused, and I will also prioritise these books in 2025. Of course, I will continue to search for books either by authors with other disabilities, or with characters with disability. Perhaps I should begin by listening to my own most recent podcast, where Jeremy Opperman and I explore the topic of disability representation in books.

If you’re interested, here is the link to that episode.

All that remains for me to do in this final blog of 2024 is to wish you a great start to the new year. Thank you for supporting the articles by reading them and spending a little time in my world. I look forward to sharing more stories and adventures with you in the coming year.

PS On the subject of books about disability, watch out for the release of the second edition of my book “Paws for Thought” about my previous guide dog, Fiji. That will be happening early in January 2025. I can’t wait to share the story with you!
